FA Launches Safety Review of Perimeter walls After Billy Vigar Death

The Football Association (FA) has launched an immediate safety review of perimeter walls and pitchside barriers at grounds across England’s National League System, following the death of former Arsenal youth player Billy Vigar. The review will examine structural condition, maintenance routines, matchday procedures and compliance with current ground-grading rules, with player, official and supporter safety the priority.

Clubs have been asked to carry out urgent inspections with qualified professionals, record any defects, put temporary mitigations in place where necessary, and liaise with local authorities and league safety officers. The FA will collate findings and, where required, update guidance on the design and upkeep of boundary structures, as well as signage and safe access points around the playing area.

While the circumstances surrounding Vigar’s death remain a matter for the relevant authorities, the FA says the review aims to reduce avoidable risks and strengthen welfare standards across the pyramid. The association offered condolences to Vigar’s family, former team-mates and the wider football community.
